Every vehicle built since 1996 carries an OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) system that logs trouble codes whenever a sensor reading falls outside expected range. A single, consistent code tied to one sensor or component — for example, a single oxygen sensor or mass air flow sensor code — is far more likely to be that specific part failing, not the module reading it. Replacing a sensor is a much smaller repair than replacing the module, so it's worth ruling out first.

Trouble codes point you toward a system, not necessarily a single faulty part. A qualified technician will typically test the specific sensor or circuit the code references before concluding the module itself needs replacement — because a sensor, connector, or wiring fault can trigger the same code as a genuine module failure.
